HOW DO WE GO ABOUT HAVING YOU PROOFREAD OR EDIT OUR DOCUMENT?
Purposive Text request clients to email their text as attached .doc or .docx or .pdf documents, which will be returned by a pre-agreed date, showing our amendments using either the ‘Review/Track Changes’ feature in Microsoft Word® 2016 or the Comment tools in Adobe® Acrobat Reader DC. Long texts (e.g. books, or substantial reports or marketing copy, or dissertations) may be broken down into parts (e.g. chapters or sections) and thereby comprise a number of documents, which may be invoiced in stages and/or require a 50% up-front payment on account before work begins.
HOW LONG WOULD IT USUALLY TAKE FOR PROOFREADING/EDITING?
Urgent projects can be turned around same-day or within hours, subject to mutual agreement. More generally, as a guide, Purposive Text aims to deliver each proofread and corrected (service no. 1, only) document (e.g. book chapter or journal article) of up to 30,000 words within five working days. Faster turn-around can be pre-agreed. Some texts may take longer. Proofreading and correcting (service no. 1 only) of documents exceeding 30,000 words, or editing (service no. 1 together with any of services 2 to 4) of documents of any length, may also take longer.
HOW MUCH DOES IT USUALLY COST FOR PROOFREADING/EDITING?
The total cost of a project may be based on a fee per word, or on a per hour or per printed page rate, or on an agreed flat fee for the whole project.
As a guide, the price for proofreading alone (service 1) is usually £10 per 1000 words. That for proofreading plus reference-formatting and/or adaptation of the text to a specific style (services 2 to 4) is dependent on the protocols to be followed and the level of compliance the draft text already exhibits, and therefore would be discussed/mutually agreed prior to undertaking such editing. As a guide, the price for such work is usually not less than £20 per 1000 words. Some projects may be charged by the hour, as a guide, in the range of £20-30 per hour. Specialist texts may cost more.
WHAT ARE YOUR STANDARD TERMS & CONDITIONS?
Prior to agreeing any proofreading and/or editing project, Purposive Text emails clients with a clear set of standard Terms & Conditions and a letter that sets out what has specifically been agreed for the particular project. Once we have agreed the contents of the letter, work can begin; modifications to our agreement can be made (in writing, subject to negotiation where applicable) thereafter, so there is flexibility as a project develops. There is always clarity about what to expect, and what work is (or is not) being carried out, by when and at what price.
WHAT FACTORS MIGHT AFFECT THE TOTAL COST OF PROOFREADING/EDITING?
Guide prices given above are subject to discussion and mutual agreement for a particular project and depend on a variety of factors, including: the length of the text (determined by Microsoft® Word's 'Word Count' feature); requested completion date; the complexity and readability of the text; its level of conformity with general English language norms in the field concerned, taking account of the likely readership; any independent (e.g. publisher's) guidelines to be followed, and the level of compliance the draft text already exhibits with those, etc.
CAN YOU ACCURATELY ESTIMATE THE COST AND TIMELINES INVOLVED?
Especially for long texts (e.g. book chapter, or specification, report or article section), Purposive Text may request a sample of your text to proofread and optionally edit in advance of agreeing to undertake a particular project, in order to provide a more realistic estimate of its cost and timelines, and to ensure that we have the requisite qualifications and experience to undertake your project in a purposive manner - to help you achieve your aims in writing the document.
WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY OF OUR INFORMATION AND USE OF OUR DATA?
Confidentiality, and compliance with data regulations and intellectual property rights, are respected by Purposive Text. Details of how we manage these obligations, together with other governance matters, are provided in our standard Terms & Conditions.
WHY DO YOU NOT TAKE ON ALL REQUESTS TO PROOFREAD/EDIT DOCUMENTS?
We take our role as a purposive proofreader, editor or document drafter/writer very seriously. We know how important the document is to you, and our professional standards are important to us. We therefore only undertake work for which we believe we are qualified and suitably experienced, and that we can carry out in a realistic time-frame and at a commensurate price to help you achieve your purposes.
